Now I can say I've heard of everything. Poor mom never had that much fun or adventures while caring for her chickens. Of course she didn't have Elvis or Mabel. Great story.
Does Elvis only crow at sunrise. I’ve known roosters that crow at sunrise because they’re basically crowing constantly, all night long, and eventually sunrise happens and they crow because they’ve been crowing...
For a week last winter he crowed all night and I was making plans to evict him and his lady from the premises. Then he just quit. Now, close to solstice, he starts in around 4:30 am when first light is glowing. Of course, he quits around noon and naps all afternoon, the bastard! I think once I build a new coop I'll put Alaska-style light-killing heavy curtains on the windows and see if I can fool him into thinking it's dark :)
Ha! Terry, I'm so relieved to know that someone else has gone through this kind of thing with chickens. I just figured I'm a fool and these chickens are working me over :) Feel free to share your favorite chicken tips - would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for the read.
Oh for sure! There is no doubt who rules the roost. Even Elvis is at the Queen's beck and call. At least twice last week I questioned my sanity in keeping them around. Then they'll do something awesome and I remember I love them :) Thanks for reading and commenting!
I once stayed at a renovated Shaker homestead in Kentucky where they had rebuilt most of the buildings and were using them as they had originally been intended. Just outside of the barn was the chicken coop and yard surrounded by a white wooden fence. Several chickens were walking around the fence, clearly looking for a way out. As I watched, two made it out, so I went to the man working in the barn and told him two chickens had escaped. He told me that they spent most of the day trying to get out of the yard and the rest of the day trying to get back in. I'm not sure you could call them free range but the Shakers had figured out their chickens' minds.
"that devious little bouffant-feathered fowl-minded bird !" Oh, this is hilarious. I am going to send it to Katrina next door who has chucks in her garden....speak soon. And I adore the photo. Wonderful writing.
Charming ~ chicken charming!
Yes, those chickens are charmingly annoying - haha :)

Thanks for the read Barbara, and I'm very happy your Mom never had to run around like this after chickens :) She probably had hers trained - ha!

Thanks, Michelle. I've raised chickens and you descriptions of their behavior are spot on; your interpretations hilarious!
